20 Years In Inman Park

Shannon and I moved into our home on Ashland Avenue on December 5, 1998!  Huge thanks to Betsy Butler for closing the deal and the amazing community that has seen us through two renovations, two kids, and lots of adventure in between.

Inman Park Festival April 28-30

Inman Park Festival

The weather looks great for this weekend's Inman Park Festival!  Come in Friday afternoon for easy access to the Tour of Homes.  Atlanta's #1 parade will start rolling Saturday at 2 p.m.

MARTA to Inman Park station is always your best option for visiting the neighborhood for festival. As of this afternoon, Beltline construction has Austin Avenue closed in both directions in front of Krog Street Market.  If you can't take the train, please Uber in to the edge of the neighborhood.

Our whole crew is in the parade this year, so we are forgoing our usual open house.  Please drop a text if you you are coming in the 'hood anytime this weekend. We look forward to seeing you.

Perfect Gift for Atlanta History Fans

Chad Elkins of 4SQATL and NASA digital fame launch his 25th Century Games start up with a bang last week.  His 1,000 piece puzzle based on a balloon-eye view of 1892 Atlanta is available as a Kickstarter campaign through August 15.

Augustus Koch was born in Germany in 1840. He moved to the US before the Civil War where he served in The Corps of Engineers. After the war, he traveled to cities around the country and illustrated Bird’s Eye View maps from hot air balloons. Augustus drew a series of perspective based maps from dozens of locations. In 1892, he tied off his hot air balloon near Grant Park and created this beautifully drawn map of Atlanta and the surrounding area complete with notable locations and street names.

Inman Park and the other historic Atlanta neighborhoods are beautifully detailed on the puzzle.

The campaign met its target twenty four hours after it went live, guaranteeing that your $20 contribution will land a treasure for you or a killer gift.

Inman Park’s Latest Offerings

The neighborhood has two new venues for great food, each playing to different parts of the foodie palate.

My crew hit BoccaLupo, currently rated #1 on the Eater Heat Map, on its opening night in the former Sauced location on Edgewood Avenue.  We had an amazing meal, including two delightful varieties of extruded pasta. Leave the kids at home and be sure to try the black spaghetti.

While no institution will ever replace Inman Park's beloved  T.W. Collins & Co., Julianna's Coffee & Crepes is making the best use of the unique cavern at the intersection of Ashland Ave. and Lake since Todd's departure.

The restaurant opened right before Inman Park Festival at the end of April, so things are still coming together a bit.  The classic Nutella crepe that you will see most folks eating is a flash back to your favorite day in Paris.  If you are huffing it on the Beltline, this ultimate carb load is only two blocks away.  The savory crepes are tasty but small, so stick with the sweet offerings.

The burgeoning restaurant scene in Inman Park has Highland Ave. backed up the weekends, but this not an issue at all during the week.  Come enjoy a patio meal anywhere in the 'hood on a Tuesday or Wednesday for a perfect Atlanta spring evening.

Be a Part of Mammalian History!

Anyone who has every attempted to walk a dog in Inman Park has surely speculated that Atlanta's small town downtown must have the highest concentration of squirrels in the universe.  A disparate group of neighbors set out to prove this very point, thus embarking on an adventure that would culminate in the Inman Park Squirrel Census.

The team's Kickstarter page has attracted much deserved media attention, perhaps laying the ground work for more research into the habits of the ATL's favorite rodents.

Skip the Black Friday sales this year and get everyone on your Christmas list an awesome infographic poster of Grey Squirrel statistics from the 30307. Hurry, supplies are limited!

Halloween Comes Early in Little Five Points

We look forward to seeing you and yours October 20 for the 12th Annual Little Five Points Halloween Parade.  Atlanta's favorite spectacle, slightly tamer and more kid friendly than in years past, kicks off at 4 p.m. Come early to enjoy a perfect fall day in Inman Park and the thrills of the 16th hippest neighborhood in the U.S with its hair down.

Parking in Little 5 will be tough going, so ditch your car in Candler Park or on Sinclair or Lake Avenues in Inman Park and stroll towards the mayhem.

After the parade you can head to the new Cameli's Pizza location on Moreland Avenue for great food and a live outdoor performance by Gringo Star. Even odds I will be there dressed as the Annoying Orange.

The History Around Us

Photo via Chad Elkins

Every year during the Inman Park Festival I pin one or two visitors to the neighborhood stumbling upon a monument and discovering that the very spot where they are buying their funnel cake was once a battleground.

I have the opposite affliction.  I am the guy who will drive blindly down a dirt road in pursuit of a historic marker dotting a state map.

Before reconnecting with my college buddy Crain Swain on Facebook, I did not realize that there was a name for my obsession - Marker Hunter.  Craig and his compatriots at the Historic Marker Database have amassed an amazing Wikipedia-style catalog of thousands of historic markers, plaques and memorials all around the world.

This is a must visit site for history geeks, travelers, and family truckster adventurers of all stripes.

HMdb uses Google Maps for directions and search results, making it a snap to find monuments like the James J. Andrews marker tucked away in an obscure block of Midtown Atlanta.  Andrews (the Jimmy Doolittle of the Civil War) was executed near 3rd Street 150 years ago for his exploits in the The Great Locomotive Chase.

Atlanta is chock full of markers, but the HMdb site is foremost a key to finding hidden treasures in lost or forgotten places.  The hunt is what brings history to life!

Wrecking Bar Brewpub's Life Affirming Sandwich

Congrats to Inman Park's own Bob and Kristine Sandage on the recent grand opening of their new venture, The Wrecking Bar Brewpub.  Their renovation of the Victorian at 292 Moreland Ave. will astonish anyone who previously visited the property to dig through mounds of old fixtures and molding during the site's previous incarnation as a Bobo junkyard.

Craft beer is the focus here, but the center piece of our visit last week was the pastrami sandwich.  This is a masterpiece to rival anything served between two pieces of bread in Atlanta.  Coleslaw drippings, expertly grilled pastrami, and the exquisite crunch of perfectly toasted breaded combine to be sublime. This is not the over-stack Katz's scene.  This is grilled not steamed in a portion that drives you savor every precious bite.

All I can say is thank you!

New Neighborhood Noshes

While it only feels like spring outside, two great new eatery have sprung up in Inman Park the past few weeks.

Igloo Zoo, located next to Acappella Books in Little Five Points, brings soft serve yogurt back to Midtown Atlanta.  While not the tangy Korean goodness offered by the now deceased (and much missed) Juicy Green, this is a lively spot with five flavors of yogurt on tap and a great selection of toppings.  Fill you cup, heap on the toppings, and pay by the ounce.

Victory Sandwich, in the heart of Inman Park, is a game changer for the neighborhood.  Build around a Taqueria del Sol model, step to the counter and choose two or three 1/2 size sandwiches from a rotating menu.  Have a seat at the bar or a table in the converted space previously home to a Johnny's Pizza.  The decor is cool, the vibe is great and the sandwiches are amazing.  If it weren't already, the intersection of Highland Ave. and Elizabeth St. is officially a hot spot in Atlanta!

Taiwanese Shaved Ice Hits Inman Park!

During my time in Taiwan, my sweet tooth quickly drew me to Baobing, the Taiwanese take on a snow cone. The versions I enjoyed in the Taipei night market were usually scrapped ice smothered with red beans or fruity syrups.

Sno-Flake, just opened in Inman Park (on Highland Avenue across from the Mead Development), offers a modern take on Taiwanese shaved ice.  Check their technique for molding flavors into ice blocks before spinning the blocks on custom built electric scrappers.  The results are delicious!

Pay a visit after your next power meal at Sotto Sotto for a healthy alternative to that chocolate soup!

Here is video of the more traditional version from Gem, my favorite all time video blogger.

Festival!

If you are in Atlanta this weekend, make your way to the Inman Park Festival for a funnel cake, good live music, and a once a year look inside many of the city's oldest homes.

Look for my crew on the Montessori In Town float during Saturday's parade.

See you there!
